Those over-charging idiots usually stay in business because they are the only business out in the boonies.
I've been dealing with my own moron and his high-priced bulldozer to clear and level just a couple of acres, and instead of using his equally lazy and useless "friend" to drill a quoted $6,000 well (without the tank and water pump), I've researched how to drill my own deep water well (between 100-200 feet) myself (with a brother's help) for less than $1,000 which includes the pipe, pump, tank, and the rental of a diesel generator to dig the dang thing.
From what I can see, I'm pretty sure you had a shallow well dug. I hope he didn't sock it to you for too much.
